Russia drinks more coffee than tea now — and more and more of it at home and to go.

Coffee overtook tea

Back in 2016 coffee imports overtook tea imports for the first time. In the morning 38% drink coffee with milk, 24% black coffee, 21% black tea.

Coffee shops change

In February 2026 there were about 7,700 classic coffee shops — 13% fewer than a year before — and 9,300 take-away points (+4%). Grocery chains already have 42,000 coffee points (+31% in a year).

Vietnam without a name

Asked about their favourite origins, people name Brazil (25%), Colombia (20%) and Ethiopia (8%) — nobody names Vietnam, though it is the first supplier by value. Its robusta goes into instant coffee and blends with no name on it.

Green coffee

In 2024 Russia imported a record 234,000 t of green coffee and 25,000 t of roasted. Green coffee is about 78% of imports: raw material for local roasters and instant coffee plants.

The way from Vietnam

By sea from Hai Phong or Ho Chi Minh City to Vladivostok — 8–11 days; by rail through China and Kazakhstan to Moscow — about 35–40 days.

In January–July Vietnam sold Russia 67,233 t of coffee — 26% more by volume — for $306 million: after the 2025 peak prices are lower.

Duty

Green coffee enters with no duty — 0% under the EAEU Common Customs Tariff. Roasted coffee with caffeine — 8%, at least €0.16 per kg; instant — 7.5%, at least €0.34 per kg.

The EAEU–Vietnam free trade agreement does not zero everything: roasted and instant coffee are on its list of exceptions and pay the ordinary rate.

22% VAT

From 1 January 2026 Russia’s standard VAT is 22%, and coffee pays it: it is not on the list of goods taxed at 10%. VAT is paid on import and on sale.

Phytosanitary certificate

Unroasted coffee is a high phytosanitary risk product: every lot needs a phytosanitary certificate from Vietnam. Roasted and instant coffee in consumer packs are outside this control.

Safety and labels

To sell, you need a declaration of conformity under TR CU 021/2011 and labels under TR CU 022/2011 — in Russian, with the importer’s details. Whether coffee needs “Chestny Znak” marking we check before sales start.

Selling online

A buyer may return goods within 7 days of receiving them, or within 3 months if no written return terms were given; the money comes back within 10 days.

A parcel from Vietnam

For personal use, duty-free up to €200 and 31 kg per parcel; green coffee up to 5 kg needs no phytosanitary certificate. Supplies for cafés and offices are an ordinary import.
